ARTIST STATEMENT

Death, torture, inhumanity, welded steel, personal thoughts, textures, 3D/2D: Using welded steel exclusively, I integrate these elements into unique sculpture. A person being tortured on a rack, a shackled victim baited for a killer trap, my mother's demise at 85, and the unknown meaning of death are all subjects in my recent work.

My sculpture does not follow in the footsteps of any other metal artist, but rather pursues a direction based on my driven passion to recount very specific narratives that relate to the black side of life. My main goal is to translate a story or idea from a mental and emotional thought to a visual entity. I want the work to be experienced the way I conceived it, with as little viewer interpretation as possible.

For me, the process of welding is as important as the content. It allows me to not only work with the steel but in it to fabricate the images I envision. The sculpture looks like welded steel, with its burnt surfaces, ragged edges, rough texture, coldness, slag, rust, seams, and grit.
